Our teeth each consist of three layers. The enamel is the outermost and hardest layer, the dentin is the second layer, and the pulp is the third layer where the blood vessels, nerves, and other tissues of each tooth are located.
If the pulp tissue is damaged for any reason it may become contaminated and will eventually become infected. The exposure of the pulp can happen in different ways; such as a large cavity, a fractured tooth, or trauma. In these cases, the treatment is usually a root canal therapy.
Root canal therapy is the process of removing the diseased tissue by making a small hole in the top of the tooth, cleaning out and disinfecting the tiny canals and reshaping them. The canals are filled with an elastic material designed to medicate and fill the canal to prevent further infection. The tooth is ready to be restored, usually with a crown to safeguard against fracture.
